Riopelle Fabric Centre, was founded by Howard & Claire Riopelle in May 1949. Howard was playing professional hockey in Montreal. Claire was an avid sewer, and loved to browse through the many fabric shops of that city. They both realized that there were very few such establishments in their home town of Ottawa, and decided that such a business could make a fine post hockey career.
After searching out suppliers in Montreal, as well as New York and Toronto, “Riopelle Fabric Centre” was opened on Bank Street, selling primarily dress fabrics, and the various sewing notions needed to make clothing.
Early on, the business expanded into drapery; manufacturing and installing custom window coverings. In the 50’s we were one of the first stores to sell ready made draperies, which we imported directly from New York, as well as Montreal & Toronto.
Our custom work expanded into bedspreads, valances, slipcovers and upholstery, as well as blinds, shades, hardware, and installation service.
The ensuing years brought expansion and contraction. As the dress goods fabric business became less and less viable, the Custom Window Covering Business grew.
We currently offer full service for “Commercial” custom window covering projects. We come to your place of business, and help you choose colours, fabrics, and treatments, while providing advice and suggestions, based on years of hands on experience.
